Espai Cràter opens CRÀTER 360, an immersive experience on volcanoes unique in Europe

The new proposal invites visitors to experience a journey to four inaccessible volcanoes, from the seabed to space.

Espai Cràter has inaugurated CRÀTER 360, a sensory experience that invites visitors on a fascinating journey through four inaccessible volcanoes. This pioneering installation will transport viewers from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of space, exploring extraordinary volcanic landscapes. The new immersive cube, financed by Next Generation funds and managed by Olot City Council, Espai Cràter and the Garrotxa County Council as part of the project ‘La Garrotxa Soft & Smart Country. Sustainable and intelligent tourist destination’ has been developed by the company Onionlab with the rigorous scientific advice of the experts Xavier de Bolós and Adelina Geyer from the Applied Volcanology team of the Geosciences Barcelona of the CSIC.

From seafloor to space

The tour begins in the ocean’s depths, where the emerging lava cools rapidly to form pillow lavas. This underwater dive reveals the complexity and beauty of the underwater volcanic formation. Next, you travel to Antarctica to explore the striking Mount Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It is a large stratovolcano with ice tunnels and a permanently active lava lake, a unique place in the world that offers a fascinating insight into volcanism in extreme environments.

The adventure continues to a tropical zone in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where a powerful hydromagmatic eruption occurs. This event causes a tsunami and a dense pyroclastic flow that reaches the coast. The last stop invites you to travel to an extra-planetary environment. After passing alongside the Moon, Mars, and an asteroid belt, it arrives at Jupiter’s satellite Io. This environment, with a high level of volcanic activity, presents eruptions that can exceed 400 km in height.

Espai Cràter, at the forefront of exhibitions in Catalonia

The use of immersive technologies is a global trend that can gradually be seen in more and more places in Catalonia. With the premiere of this new experience and the video-mapping of the Puig del Roser volcano outcrop, the Espai Cràter remains an essential exhibition project in Catalonia, as is confirmed by the more than 111,809 visitors who have visited the centre since it opened. In terms of tourism, the centre continues to attract visitors from all over the world, to position Olot and La Garrotxa as a tourist activity linked to the values of the landscape and volcanism.

Innovation and education, a perfect fusion

With this installation, Espai Cràter seeks to generate a visual and sensory impact and offer an educational resource that helps to raise awareness of the complex and inaccessible volcanic processes. This unique experience combines technology, science, and art with educational content, which enriches the understanding of the natural phenomena that shape our planet.

With the immersive cube and the video mapping, Espai Cràter is consolidating its position as an international benchmark in the use of immersive technologies applied to scientific dissemination. The scientific advisory committee underlines the quality and rigor of the contents, as well as the ability of Espai Cràter to communicate the science of volcanology effectively and attractively.

Free admission for the inhabitants of La Garrotxa until 31 December 2024

As was done during the inauguration of the Espai Cràter, the inhabitants of the Garrotxa region will be able to enjoy the exhibition, with the immersive novelties, free of charge until 31 December 2024. In this way, the Olot Town Council and Espai Cràter are responding to the great interest shown by the more than 9,000 inhabitants of the region during the opening period.
