Educational activities

Espai Cràter offers an integrated activities programme aimed at different educational levels, which allows students to get to know and love the world around and shows them how to take care of it. These activities are designed to create positive experiences, stimulate their curiosity and inform them, by means of observation, experience and experimentation. The aim is to awaken the students’ interest in science and research.

We believe education to be a driving force for social change, especially with respect to forming of independent opinions and critical thought.

Research

Espai Cràter seeks to become a benchmark educational centre in the field of volcanology, by forging links with schools, institutions, and other organizations, to promote projects and activities. The first step on this journey was signing an agreement with Geociències Barcelona, a body belonging to the Consell Superior d’Investigacions Científiques (the Advanced Council for Scientific Investigation), this gives the center access to the most important scientific space in Spain and to become an active part of large-scale, key international research projects.

Since 2022, Espai Cràter has also had collaboration agreements with the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Girona, as well as with the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Also in the field of research, Olot City Council, through the Espai Cràter and the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, organizes the annual Oriol de Bolòs Scholarship in natural sciences.

Documentation point

The Espai Cràter is a Documentation Point of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, the result of collaboration between institutions, which has been in place for years and was formalized in 2022 with the signing of the framework agreement between the City Council of Olot and the Department of Climate Action, Food, and Rural Agenda.

The Espai Cràter Documentation Point has some 500 research materials, books, articles, magazines, leaflets, and games that are renewed monthly and deal with the following topics: landscape, fauna and flora, agriculture and livestock, protected areas, land management, hydrology, soils, environmental education, sustainable tourism, environmental impact, sustainable architecture, climate change, heritage, among others.
